ABOUT the El Toro, and in particular, this bass guitar shown on the right.
El Toro History. The El Toro was made by Maton as the signature guitar for The Strangers, and Australian band featuring John Farrah who, after leaving the Strangers went on to join Hank Marvin and Bruce Walsh of the Shadows. He also wrote extensively for Olivia Newton-John.
It is certainly an unusual guitar and has one of the lowest production runs made by Maton with only 56 six string and 47 basses ever made. According to the Maton blurb at the time "Boasting" the latest innovations in exotic electric guitars. But I must also insert here that there are other opinions suggesting numbers are much less. The six string El Toro had 2 and a 1/2 octave, 31 fret playing range. It was the "In" musicians instrument designed with Spanish influences.
One gets the designer had been drinking too much "Spanish influence"    Although it is now around 50 years old, it is typical of a Maton that does play extremely well. This bass also carries a certificate letter from Merv Cargill, renowned Australian Luthier as one of three instruments refinished for The Strangers.
