  • The Windsor WHIRLE Dance Banjo Eclipse Model 10
Walnut Neck, Ebonised Back and Rim, 12 Hexagon Tension screws. A well made instrument. Note the unusual was the 5th string feeds through the neck/fingerboard and up the headstock. Also and unusual point is that the necks were a slotted headstock with 3 per sid4e tuners even though it is a 5 string instrument. The reason is most likely that the tuner sets being 3 per side were more readily able to be supplied as an instrument part.
  • This banjo is currently fitted with nylon strings, tonally, very good, not overly loud or sharp/bright but these instruments can also be suitably fitted with steel banjo strings for a more traditional banjo sound if required.
  • An interesting and reliable old instrument. Comes with original but worn hardcase. Case handle missing.

Description

The Windsor Whirl ECLIPSE banjo has an interesting history tied to the Windsor company, one of the largest banjo manufacturers in Britain during the early 20th century. The company was founded by Arthur Octavius Windsor, who initially made coffin furniture but later turned his hobby of playing the banjo into a business.

The Windsor company produced a variety of banjos, including the Whirl ECLIPSE model, which was known for its quality and craftsmanship. The factory was located in Birmingham and operated for nearly 50 years until it was destroyed during a German air raid in December. Despite this, Windsor banjos remain highly regarded among collectors and musicians for their historical significance and unique sound.
